Dhaka, Jan 28 (V7N) — Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin stated that objections have been raised against any actions that could undermine the constitutional independence of the Election Commission (EC). His remarks came following a meeting with a delegation from the European Union (EU) at the Election Commission office in Agargaon on Tuesday.
The CEC informed reporters that the EU has pledged to provide all necessary assistance in organising free and fair elections to uphold Bangladesh’s democratic journey. "The EU has emphasised the need for reforms and believes the time for implementing these changes is short," he said.
He further assured that the EC is fully prepared to ensure that the upcoming national elections are conducted fairly and transparently. "We have conveyed our objection to anything that compromises the EC's independence, and the EU is committed to maintaining this independence," the CEC added.
EU Ambassador Michael Miller also addressed the media, highlighting discussions about the upcoming parliamentary elections. "The EU supports Bangladesh in holding elections that meet international standards. We have expressed our willingness to send observers to monitor the process," he said.
The EU delegation expressed satisfaction with the EC’s preparations and stressed the importance of reforms as a prerequisite for democratic transition. They reiterated their commitment to working with Bangladesh to achieve fair and credible elections.
This meeting underscores the EU's continued engagement with Bangladesh to support its electoral processes and democratic governance.
