Dhaka, Feb 2 (V7N) – BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has emphasized that elections must come first to implement any reform proposals, as reforms should be made through elected representatives. He warned that prolonging discussions on reforms would only benefit dictatorial forces.

Tarique made these remarks while addressing a BNP workshop on state repair held in Kadamtali, Dhaka, on Sunday (February 2).

"No Alternative to Elections"

Rahman stressed the importance of elections in ensuring accountability, stating:

  • "Many people have lost their lives fighting for their right to vote."
  • "There is no alternative to elections to establish accountability."
  • "Only through elections can we begin untangling the country’s problems."

He urged for an immediate return to the democratic process, asserting that the sooner elections are held, the sooner the country can be saved from its current crisis.

BNP’s 31-Point Reform Proposal

Rahman also highlighted that BNP was the first to propose reforms to counter dictatorial rule, referring to the 31-point reform agenda introduced by the party two and a half years ago.

He pointed out that there is little difference between BNP’s reform proposal and the government's current reform initiatives, but criticized the ruling party for making unrealistic promises, such as providing rice at 10 taka per kg, instead of focusing on practical solutions to improve people's lives.

Tarique Rahman reiterated that BNP remains committed to genuine reforms and called for elections as the first step toward restoring democracy and ensuring a better future for the people.
