Dhaka, Apr 17 (V7N)- The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is engaged in in-depth discussions with the National Consensus Commission on a range of reform proposals, with a particular focus on constitutional changes, judiciary reforms, and electoral system overhauls.

The dialogue, held on Thursday at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, is part of an ongoing initiative to implement state reforms under the interim government.

Speaking during a break in the sessions, Salahuddin Ahmed, a senior member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, said that the party is keen to demonstrate its seriousness about comprehensive reforms. “We have already submitted reform reports related to the judiciary, administration, and electoral system. These discussions are ongoing, but this is not the final stage,” he told reporters.

Ahmed also acknowledged some early misunderstandings regarding the spreadsheet circulated by the commission, which required ‘yes’ or ‘no’ responses on specific reform points. “There was confusion and misinterpretation in the process, but we are now clarifying these issues through detailed discussions,” he said.

The BNP has reportedly submitted both hard and soft copies of its reform proposals. According to Salahuddin Ahmed, the party initially received 70 out of 131 reform points in the preliminary constitutional reform report. As a result, comprehensive commentary was not possible earlier.

“There will be attempts to reach consensus on key aspects of constitutional reform. More specific details will be disclosed later,” he added.

The reform initiatives come under the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, which assumed power following the ouster of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024. Since then, the government has formed 11 specialized commissions in two phases to address structural and administrative challenges in the country.

The current session between the BNP and the Consensus Commission is being chaired by Commission Vice President Dr. Ali Riaz. Other notable commission members present include Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, retired Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, and Monir Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor.

The BNP delegation includes prominent figures such as Barrister Jamiruddin Sarkar, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Ismail Zabiullah, and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal.

As the political landscape in Bangladesh continues to shift under the interim government's reform agenda, the outcomes of these discussions are expected to significantly influence the country’s constitutional and institutional framework in the coming months.
