DHAKA, May 29, (V7N) – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia today expressed optimism that democracy will soon be restored in Bangladesh, while paying homage to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman on his 44th martyrdom anniversary.
“Ziaur Rahman sacrificed his life for democracy and for safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty. But democracy continues to face obstacles. Very soon, we will see its restoration in Bangladesh,” Khaleda said.
She made the remarks while virtually addressing a discussion organized by the BNP at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka to mark the occasion.
Calling on party members to honor Ziaur Rahman’s legacy by resolving national problems through democratic means, Khaleda described the day as one of profound sorrow not only for her family but for the entire nation.
“Every year, this day returns with immense grief, not just for our family, but for the people of this country who lost a true guardian,” she said.
Khaleda Zia highlighted Ziaur Rahman’s central role in Bangladesh’s history, saying:
“Ziaur Rahman is an inseparable name in the creation of our motherland. His historic declaration of independence from Chattogram made his name forever etched in the nation's foundation. He became a martyr as a successful, honest, visionary, and patriotic president.”
She also described him as a symbol of democracy, independence, and press freedom, and a champion of judicial autonomy, crediting him with articulating the enduring philosophy of Bangladeshi nationalism.
The BNP chief concluded by praying for eternal peace for the departed soul of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman.
