Dhaka, May 31 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called for holding the next general election by December, with senior leaders demanding a clear roadmap to ensure a free and fair election. The demand came as part of observances marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.
At a discussion program on Friday, BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized that the people of the country want elections by December 2025 and said that the party would work with the masses to realize this national aspiration.
Meanwhile, at a separate event held in front of the party’s central office in Nayapaltan, another Standing Committee Member, Mirza Abbas, strongly criticized Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of spreading "hatred" against the BNP even while abroad.
"BNP is being unfairly blamed regarding the elections. But the reality is, Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus himself does not want elections in the country," Mirza Abbas told reporters after paying tribute at Ziaur Rahman's tomb in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, where senior leaders including Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moin Khan, AZM Zahid Hossain, and others were also present.
He also criticized the government for "importing foreigners to carry out reforms," arguing that local talents should be entrusted with such critical responsibilities.
As part of the day’s commemorative programs, Eid gifts and food were distributed among the underprivileged at the Nayapaltan office. Doa mahfils and other events were also held nationwide to honor Ziaur Rahman, who was assassinated on May 30, 1981 at the Chittagong Circuit House.
BNP leaders warned that if their demand for elections by December is not met, the party would intensify its movement in the coming months.
