Dhaka, Jun 07 (V7N) — BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has reiterated her unwavering commitment to democracy, stating that “nothing will be sustainable without a democratic system.”
The remark was conveyed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday night, following an Eid-ul-Azha greetings exchange at the party chief’s Gulshan residence, Firoza.
Speaking to reporters, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Begum Khaleda Zia is in better health than before. She extends Eid greetings to the people of the country.” While he did not disclose any specific message from the former Prime Minister regarding the upcoming election, he emphasized her stance that democracy is the key to lasting stability.
Mirza Fakhrul reiterated BNP’s belief that December is the most appropriate time for the next national election, a position he has maintained in response to Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus’ recent announcement proposing polls in April 2026.
Earlier in the day, after paying homage at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, Fakhrul stated that the chief advisor’s roadmap failed to meet public expectations and criticized the proposed election timing as not well-considered.
Several senior BNP leaders and allies attended the Eid greetings ceremony, including Standing Committee members Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, and Salahuddin Ahmed, as well as Vice Chairpersons Selima Rahman, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, Mohammad Shahjahan, Altaf Hossain, Abdul Awal Mintoo, and Advisory Council members Abdul Halim and Fazle Elahi Akbar.
Jatiya Party (Khaleda-led) Chairman Mustafa Zaman Haider and the Chairperson’s Private Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar were also present.
