Dhaka, June 18 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that a particular political party is dissatisfied with the proposed February election schedule due to fears of losing political relevance. He claimed this was the reason behind their absence from the recent Consensus Commission meeting.

He made the remarks while addressing the BNP North Metropolitan Unit’s membership renewal program in Uttara, Dhaka, on Wednesday afternoon.

Although Mirza Fakhrul did not mention any party by name, the comment was a clear reference to Jamaat-e-Islami, which has openly criticized the joint statement issued after the meeting between Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in the UK.

Unofficially, Jamaat leaders said that their boycott of the Consensus Commission meeting on Tuesday was a protest against that joint statement. Despite their absence, other participating parties reached agreements on several significant issues.

Mirza Fakhrul further said that BNP had agreed to the proposed election timeframe of December to February through discussions and in response to the government’s invitation during the London meeting.

Addressing party activists, Fakhrul urged them to refrain from extortion or forcibly taking people’s property. “People must vote out of love for the party,” he said, emphasizing that no political success is possible without earning public trust.

Regarding potential new entrants to BNP, Fakhrul clarified that no one from the Awami League will be welcomed into the party. However, he added that individuals with good reputations would not be excluded.
