Tangail, July 24 (V7N) – In preparation for the upcoming 13th National Parliament Elections, the Gono Odhikar Parishad ('People's Rights Council', abbreviated as GOP), has announced its first batch of candidates, revealing 36 constituencies where they will field candidates under the truck symbol. Among them, Shakil Ujjaman, a senior member of the Gono Odhikar Parishad’s Higher Council and the party’s office secretary, has been nominated for the Tangail-2 (Bhuyanpur-Gopalpur) constituency.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the central office of Gono Odhikar Parishad in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon.
Shakil Ujjaman, born in Hemnagar, Gopalpur Upazila of Tangail, completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Jahangirnagar University. He has been involved in politics since his university days and has gained national prominence as the convener of the Quota Reform Movement.
Speaking about his constituency, Shakil Ujjaman said, "Gopalpur-Bhuyanpur is not just the name of two upazilas, it is the place where my existence began. This is where I was born and raised, and I have formed a deep, spiritual connection with the people of this land."
He further added, "During the time of the autocratic government, I was a victim of enforced disappearance, torture, and imprisonment. At that time, the people of this region took to the streets demanding my release—an indebtedness that can never be repaid."
According to Shakil, Gono Odhikar Parishad is a political force representing the younger generation, who have overcome fear to fight for people's rights on the streets. "When many political parties remained silent, we were the ones who carried the torch of the movement," he said.
A source from Gono Odhikar Parishad revealed that the party plans to release the list of candidates for all constituencies in phases across the country. The upcoming candidate list is being presented with the aim of reinstating democracy and promoting youth leadership.
