Dhaka, Oct 20 (V7N) – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a meeting with nomination aspirants from the Sylhet division ahead of the upcoming national election. The meeting took place on Sunday evening at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, where around 80 aspirants from 19 constituencies across Sylhet’s four districts were present, according to party sources.
Party insiders said that BNP’s central leadership has been holding a series of meetings with nomination seekers from each division to discuss electoral strategies and local campaign preparations. Following the directive of the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, central leaders are advising local representatives to strengthen grassroots organization and ensure united efforts ahead of the national polls.
During Sunday’s session, Mirza Fakhrul urged leaders to overcome internal divisions and work collectively in support of BNP’s nominated candidates in the upcoming election. Participants shared their political activities and electoral preparations with the Secretary General, who in turn provided guidance on effective campaign coordination and voter engagement.
A source attending the meeting mentioned that former Sylhet City Corporation mayor and BNP Chairperson’s adviser, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, was invited as a potential candidate for the Sylhet-4 (Gowainghat, Companiganj, and Jaintapur) constituency. However, Ariful clarified that he is seeking nomination for Sylhet-1, not Sylhet-4.
Party insiders also revealed that not all nomination aspirants from Sylhet division were invited to the meeting. Only selected individuals preferred by the party’s organizational leadership were included, leading to some frustration among those left out.
According to party sources, Mirza Fakhrul has been assigned to oversee the verification and selection process for BNP candidates in the Sylhet division. The meeting was part of his effort to personally engage with local leaders and assess the political landscape in preparation for finalizing nominations.
