Dhaka, Nov 28 (V7N) – Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was sworn in for a third consecutive term as the Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami during a ceremony at the Al-Falah Auditorium in Maghbazar on Friday evening. Overcome with emotion, he repeatedly broke down in tears during the oath-taking.
The oath was administered by ATM Mashum Shafiqul Rahman, a member of the party’s central executive council and assistant secretary general, who served as the chief election commissioner for the internal election.
The election for the 2026–2028 term was conducted via secret ballot from October 9 to October 25, in which 116,792 registered members cast their votes. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman received the highest number of votes, securing his position as Amir for the third consecutive term.
The oath-taking ceremony was part of the annual session of the central Shura of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, which is being held on November 28–29. Prominent leaders from various political parties, members of the central executive council, central working committee, and Shura members attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed humility, saying he did not consider himself fully qualified for the role. He praised the experienced and capable colleagues within the party, remarking that it was unclear to him why members had entrusted him with this responsibility.
Reflecting on past hardships, he noted that previous governments had subjected Jamaat and its leaders to unjust treatment. “Prisons were our first homes. We were repeatedly detained without any genuine charges. Our only offense was protesting against injustice, but even that was suppressed. Various oppressive measures, black laws, and orders were imposed on us,” he said.
The oath-taking marks the beginning of his new term, during which he is expected to lead the party through its strategic, political, and organizational activities, while the annual central Shura session continues to discuss key issues facing the party and the nation.
