Dhaka, Dec 25 (V7N)— In a significant political development on the day of Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh, Mir Arshadul Haque, the Joint Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has announced his resignation from the party. Haque, who was also a candidate for the Chittagong-16 (Baanshkhali) parliamentary constituency, shared his decision via a Facebook status on Thursday, citing the party’s failure to uphold the promises of the July mass uprising.
In his statement, Haque expressed deep disillusionment with the NCP’s leadership, stating that the "dream and potential" he initially saw in the party had vanished over the last 10 months. He accused a "clique" within the political landscape of creating social instability and using religion to foster division, thereby pushing the country toward an uncertain future. "The most urgent need at the moment is to transition to democracy and establish stability in Bangladesh," he wrote, adding that he could no longer continue on what he perceives as a "wrong path."
Coinciding with the end of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s 17-year exile, Haque formally pledged his personal support to Rahman and the BNP-led alliance. He praised Rahman’s leadership during and after the July coup, highlighting his "skill and ability to lead the country by embracing everyone." Haque specifically noted that while other parties have focused on populism and religious agendas, Tarique Rahman has presented a "smart approach" with a clear vision for health, education, environment, and employment.
Mir Arshadul Haque concluded his announcement by urging the youth to support Tarique Rahman’s "public welfare vision" for the sake of the country’s future, rather than being influenced by political "commotion." While he has severed all political ties with the NCP, he noted that he would maintain personal relationships with his former colleagues. The NCP, which emerged as a student-led political force following the 2024 revolution, has yet to issue a formal response to the high-profile resignation.
