Dhaka, Dec 25 (V7N)- Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has described the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh after 17 years as a positive reflection of the country’s democratic struggle.

Nahid Islam made the remarks in a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday (December 25). He noted that Tarique Rahman and his family had been forced into exile due to state persecution for political dissent, and that the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs in the country’s mass uprisings created the context for their return.

He added that the goal is to establish a Bangladesh rooted in democratic values, where no political leaders face state repression for dissent. “Our main aim is to ensure the rule of law and political rights of every citizen in the free Bangladesh that we are building today, breaking the blocked political environment of the past decade and a half,” he wrote.

Nahid Islam further stated, “We believe that Tarique Rahman’s return will further consolidate the practice of multi-party democracy in the country. Our main challenge now is to build a culture of coexistence and healthy competition in the new political reality.”

He concluded his post by welcoming Tarique Rahman, writing: “Welcome Tarique Rahman to his homeland. May his participation in building the democratic future of the country be fruitful.”
