Dhaka, Dec 30 (V7N) — Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is in critical condition while receiving treatment in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital. Her health has deteriorated significantly, and she is currently dependent on life support. Daily dialysis is being administered, and any interruption in the process worsens her condition. Due to her age and multiple health complications, comprehensive treatment is challenging at this stage.
Dr. Ziaul Haque, a member of the medical board overseeing Khaleda Zia’s treatment, informed that her condition is extremely critical. Another board member, Dr. Jafar Iqbal, stated, “Madam’s health is critically ill. We request prayers from everyone. Further examinations are ongoing, and decisions will be made once results are received. She remains in the CCU.”
Another medical board physician said, “The board is making every effort. Beyond that, it is in God’s hands. Her age has brought old illnesses to the forefront, and some conditions were untreated for a long time. Full recovery from all complications is difficult at this age.”
Khaleda Zia, 80, has long suffered from arthritis, diabetes, kidney, liver, heart, lung, and eye-related complications. During her stay at home, she experienced breathing difficulties, cough, fever, and general weakness. Her condition worsened, leading to her hospital admission on November 23. Rapid deterioration of her lungs, heart, and kidneys necessitated her transfer to the CCU on November 27.
Since her return to Bangladesh from London after 17 years on December 25, her son, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, has visited her multiple times. On Saturday, he offered special prayers at her bedside and tearfully prayed for her recovery. Khaleda Zia has been under CCU care for over a month, with her daughter-in-law Syeda Sharmila Rahman, housekeeper Fatema, and staff member Rupa Akter providing continuous support. Her younger brother Shamim Eskander and brother’s wife Kaniz Fatema are also by her side. Cardiology specialist Professor Shahab Uddin Talukder leads her treatment.
Khaleda Zia could not personally sign her nomination papers for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election due to her severe illness. For the first time, she provided thumb impressions on her nomination documents. She is set to contest in three constituencies, with alternative candidates submitting nominations on her behalf in light of her health condition.
Medical authorities continue to monitor her health closely, providing treatment under the guidance of a medical board consisting of local and international specialists. Her condition remains critical, and prayers for her recovery are being requested.
