Jhalokathi, Dec 31 (V7N) — Dr Mahmuda Alam Mitu, the National Citizen Party (NCP) nominated candidate for the Jhalokathi-1 constituency comprising Rajapur and Kanthalia upazilas, has alleged that she has been receiving repeated death threats amid the political situation surrounding the upcoming election.
On Tuesday afternoon, Dr Mitu shared the allegation through a post on her verified Facebook account, stating that she continues to receive threatening phone calls from the same number. In the post, she wrote that the threats have resumed on a daily basis, including explicit warnings of being burned alive or attacked with sharp weapons.
She said she had refrained from disclosing the matter earlier to avoid causing concern among supporters. However, she claimed that after learning about her decision to contest the election as part of a political alliance, certain quarters began spreading fabricated and bizarre stories aimed at tarnishing her character.
According to her statement, news of the alliance has intensified political hostility, leading to what she described as a coordinated campaign of intimidation and defamation. Despite the threats, she said she is neither afraid nor shaken and urged her supporters not to be disturbed by online posts or comments targeting her.
Dr Mitu further warned that the harassment could escalate, including the use of artificial intelligence-generated videos and edited nude or manipulated images, as suggested by her husband. She appealed to well-wishers to ignore defamatory content and requested prayers for her safety.
No official complaint or police response was immediately available regarding the alleged threats at the time of filing this report.
