Dhaka, Feb 04 (V7N) — The parliamentary election for Sherpur-3 (Sribardi–Jhenaigati) constituency has been postponed following the death of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badal, in line with the Representation of the People Order (RPO).
The information was confirmed on Wednesday (February 4) by Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat.
He said that under Article 17(1) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, if a legitimately nominated candidate dies after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers and before polling, the Election Commission must recognize the deceased as a valid candidate and postpone the election in that constituency.
Following official confirmation of the death, the Returning Officer will issue a public notice canceling ongoing election activities in the constituency. The Election Commission will announce a fresh election schedule at a later date.
However, the EC noted that the law allows certain exceptions. If a candidate dies before final validation of nomination or if there is another valid candidate from the same party in the constituency, the election may not need to be postponed. In such cases, decisions are taken immediately in accordance with the law.
Earlier, at around 10:00 pm on Tuesday, Nuruzzaman Badal—also the Sherpur district Jamaat secretary—fell seriously ill and was admitted to Sribardi Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he died on the way, according to party and family sources.
Local Jamaat leaders and family members said Badal had been suffering from kidney disease for a long time.
His funeral prayers are scheduled to be held at Sherpur Municipal Eidgah Ground at 2:30 pm and later at Sribardi Government College Ground at 5:00 pm.
