On Friday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was 77 years old. Family members in Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj wished him a happy birthday.

Sayrul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP media cell, stated that Fakhrul was welcomed with a happy birthday at the central jail at midday by his wife Rahat Ara Begum, younger daughter Mirza Safaruh, and sister Najma Kalam.

He said that on Mirza Fakhrul's birthday, the family members brought his favorite meal and a cake to the jail. They visited with the BNP leader in the jail for around forty-five minutes.

When Rahat Ara was contacted, she stated that they were dissatisfied with Fakhrul because of his poor health.

"Due to his illness, he dropped five kg of weight. Thus, it saddens me to see him in such bad health," she said.

The nation's citizens were asked to offer prayers for Fakhrul's unwell spouse by his wife.

Since his arrest on October 29, a day after the BNP's large protest in the capital's Nayapaltan neighborhood was the scene of violent altercations between police and demonstrators, Fakhrul has been detained in jail.

On January 26, 1948, Fakhrul was born in Thakurgaon. His father, the late Mirza Ruhul Amin, served as a minister in the Pakistani government and as the leader of the Muslim League.

Fakhrul, who was active in left-wing politics as a student, finished his undergraduate and graduate studies in Economics at Dhaka University.

Later, after passing the BCS test, he decided to pursue a career in teaching. In the 1980s Fakhrul officially entered politics and left his position as a teacher.

He was elected MP from Thakurgaon-1 with BNP's ticket in 2001 and then made a state minister. He was also elected MP from Bogura-6 seat in the 11th parliamentary election. But he did not take oath yet as the BNP rejected the election results.

Following the passing of Khandaker Delwar Hossain, the party's secretary general at the time, in 2011, Fakhrul was appointed acting secretary general of the BNP. Five years later, in 2016, he was fully charged with the party's secretary general post.
