"She has no authority to decide whether to become our party's chairman or to remove anyone from any position following our party constitution:" Chunnu

Jatiya Party Chief Patron Raushan Ershad named herself the party's chairman on Sunday, removing the incumbent secretary general and chief from their positions amid mounting dissatisfaction among the party's electorate over the disastrous results of the 7th January parliamentary election.

As the party's secretary general, she also named Kazi Mamunur Rashid, a member of the Jatiya Party presidium.

The choice was made by Raushon at a meeting with some of the party leaders who had either been removed from their duties or quit willingly at her home in Gulshan.

She added, "To resolve the ongoing crisis (within the party), I have relieved GM Quader and Mujibul Haque Chunnu from their positions as party chairman and secretary general, respectively, by Article 20-1 of the party's constitution."

The party's founder HM Ershad's widow Raushan, who is also GM Quader's sister-in-law, said that she assumed leadership of the party at the behest of its adherents.

She said that until the party's next council meeting, Kazi Mamunur Rashid will serve as the Jatiya Party Secretary General and oversee all organizational tasks.

Raushan stated that she had to act since GM Quader and Mujibul Haque had seriously harmed the party and she could not stand by and watch it suffer.

In addition, she promised that the party national council will meet at the appropriate time and that the expelled and relieved party leaders would be given their positions back.

At a news conference, Chunnu stated that they are less concerned about Raushon's irrational action since she lacks the power to make such judgments.

He declared, "She has no authority to decide whether to become our party's chairman or to remove anyone from any position following our party constitution."

Chunnu said that Raushan had previously made three announcements on GM Quader's removal before retracting them.

Thus, it is not something we are thinking about. There is no foundation for it. He answered, "The constitution gives her (Raushan) no such power.
