Dhaka, Sep 04 (V7N) - Naemul Hasan Russell, the president of Chhatra League, has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and handed over to Mohammadpur Police Station late on Tuesday night, around 10:15 PM. The arrest was confirmed by Shah Iftekhar Hasan, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station.

Russell is reportedly facing multiple cases, including several murder charges linked to the recent anti-discrimination student movement. He is also a defendant in a case involving an attack on the convoy of the former U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, Marsha Blum Barnicutt.

While details regarding the exact location of his arrest remain unclear, OC Shah Iftekhar Hasan noted that RAB had taken Russell into custody and subsequently handed him over to local police authorities. "RAB arrested Russell at night and handed him over to Mohammadpur Police Station. There are several murder cases against him in Mohammadpur and other police stations. However, I don't know from where RAB arrested him," he stated.

The arrest of Russell comes amid a broader crackdown on political and student leaders in the wake of the anti-discrimination protests, which have seen increased tensions and allegations of violent conduct by various factions.

The arrest of high-profile individuals like Naemul Hasan Russell reflects the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order amidst the unrest following the recent political upheaval in the country.
