Dhaka, Sept 5 (V7N): BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused the Election Commission (EC) of being complicit in the erosion of democracy in Bangladesh. Speaking at a press conference organized by the Agriculturalists Association of Bangladesh (AAB) at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, Rizvi demanded accountability for those who have undermined the constitutional system.

Rizvi criticized Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal for announcing election results tainted by allegations of rigging and theft. He questioned Awal's decision to remain in office despite the controversy, suggesting that the EC shares responsibility for the current democratic crisis.

The press conference was convened in response to what Rizvi described as misleading media coverage. He praised the recent movement led by children and teenagers for its role in ending Sheikh Hasina's regime on August 5.

Rizvi also expressed skepticism towards attempts to reconcile with former autocrats, stating that such actions betray the sacrifices of past martyrs. He emphasized that the BNP remains committed to independence and democracy, respecting all religions.

Criticizing past actions of the Awami League, Rizvi recalled how the party had previously shut down newspapers and established Baksal rule in 1975. He claimed that under the current administration, media outlets critical of the government have been silenced or repurposed as propaganda tools.

Rizvi concluded by urging journalists to uphold the principles of accuracy and objectivity, asserting that a free and independent media is essential for democracy’s health and stability.
