Keraniganj, June 22 (V7N) — A gas leak from an underground pipeline led to a powerful explosion in a residential building in the Khejurbag area of South Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday night, severely injuring three members of the same family.
According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, the explosion originated from a leak in a gas line beneath the five-story residential building named Pakija. Authorities have since declared the structure structurally unsafe and vulnerable to further hazards.
The injured victims were identified as:
Al-Samir, a young child,
Faruk Hossain, the father,
Shiuli Akhter, the mother.
The family had been residing in a ground-floor room of the building when the explosion occurred, reportedly while they were asleep.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after the explosion. The injured were taken to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, where they are currently receiving treatment. Hospital sources say all three suffered varying degrees of burn injuries, though the full extent is still being assessed.
“The explosion was caused by accumulated gas from a leakage in the underground line. The building has been compromised and is not safe for continued habitation,” said a spokesperson from the Fire Service.
Local residents described the sound of the explosion as "deafening" and reported that windows in neighboring buildings were also shattered due to the blast's impact.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the leak and assess whether any safety regulations were violated during the building's construction or gas line installation.
Authorities have urged all residential and commercial property owners in the area to conduct immediate checks for potential gas leaks and ensure compliance with safety standards to prevent similar incidents.
