Police in Jaintapur upazila said that four activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) perished late last night when their microbus on Sylhet-Tamabil Road crashed into a ditch beside the road.
These individuals, who were from the Nijpat union of the upazila, were identified as the deceased: Jubayer Ahsan, 24, son of Jahurul Miah; Nihal Pal, 25, son of Ranadip Pal; Tamal, 24, son of Arju Miah; and Sumon Ahmed, 25, son of Harun Miah.
They were active members of the Chhatra League despite not holding any positions.
Of the victims, Tamal was a candidate for the position of BCL's upazila unit general secretary.
Rahel Siraj, the general secretary of the district unit BCL, attested to their confirmation.
Around 11:30 p.m., according to Wali Ullah Badrul, organizing secretary of the Sylhet metropolitan unit of the AL volunteer group Swechasebak League, the BCL activists were taking the microbus from Nijpat to Jaflong.
On the journey to Jaflong, the driver lost control of the microbus close to a bridge, causing it to fall into a roadside ditch, he said.
Two of the four young guys were pronounced dead at Upazila Health Complex after locals rescued them, according to Wali Ullah. The other two died of their wounds while being transported to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The bodies were kept at the Osmani Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy, according to Officer-in-Charge Md Tajul Islam of the Jaintapur police station, who confirmed the information.
