Rajshahi, Jan 06 (V7N) - Vast stretches of farmland in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi have transformed into a sea of yellow as mustard flowers bloom across the horizon, signaling a sharp rise in cultivation driven by higher edible oil prices and government agricultural incentives.
From early morning, the scent of mustard flowers drifts through dew-covered fields while bees hover in dense clusters, collecting nectar. Farmers have placed rows of beehive boxes beside their fields, enabling the production of pure honey while simultaneously improving pollination and boosting crop yields. Many describe the landscape as if nature itself has laid out a golden blanket across the countryside.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension in Godagari, the mustard cultivation target for the current season stands at around 16,240 hectares, with cultivation already completed on approximately 14,120 hectares. Last year, mustard was grown on about 7,420 hectares, indicating nearly a twofold increase this season. Fertile loamy and sandy-loam soil, combined with low production costs and higher profit potential, has encouraged farmers to expand cultivation rapidly.
Local farmers say mustard seeds are typically sown during Kartik and Agrahayan months, requiring minimal irrigation and fertilizer. The crop offers multiple benefits, including natural soil enrichment as fallen leaves decompose into organic matter. After oil extraction, mustard cake is widely used as nutritious cattle feed, and farmers note that cultivating boro rice after mustard significantly reduces fertilizer expenses.
Rising edible oil prices have also influenced planting decisions. Many farmers aim to meet household oil needs while selling surplus produce in local markets. Timely access to seeds, fertilizers, and technical guidance from agricultural officials has strengthened confidence, with expectations of substantial profits this season.
Agriculture officials describe mustard as a cost-effective and strategic crop, aligned with government efforts to reduce reliance on imported edible oil. If weather conditions remain favorable, authorities expect record mustard production in Godagari this season, contributing positively to local livelihoods and the regional economy.
