Chilmari, Sep 14 (V7N) - Shafiqul Islam, a local farmer, is hard at work planting peanut seeds with his family. However, he has voiced concerns over the absence of government agricultural incentives to support his efforts.
 
In Chilmari's vast char regions, farmers are currently focused on peanut cultivation. The barren, sandy lands are being prepared for planting as the month of Bhadra is considered the best time for sowing peanuts. Within three months, farmers are hopeful to harvest the crop.
 
During a visit on Saturday morning to the southern Khaua char of Nayahat Union, Shafiqul explained that Bhadra is the optimal month for planting peanuts. He and his family have been working for several days to plant seeds. This season, Shafiqul is cultivating peanuts on three bighas of land, but he expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of assistance from the agricultural office.
 
Shafiqul estimated that the total cost of cultivating peanuts on his three bighas will be around 120,000 BDT. He expects a yield of about 120 maunds of peanuts, which could sell for over 300,000 BDT if sold fresh. If the peanuts are dried, the yield will decrease to around 60 maunds, potentially generating up to 600,000 BDT.
 
Another farmer, Asab Uddin Sheikh, mentioned that he has planted peanuts on one bigha of land.
 
Upazila Agriculture Officer Kumar Pronoy Bishan Das stated that the target for peanut cultivation has not yet been finalized, and no incentive support has been provided to peanut farmers so far.
