Sherpur, Oct 18 (V7N)— Farooq-e-Azam, Adviser to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, emphasised the importance of constructing a permanent dam on the Maharshi River to reduce the impact of recurring floods and natural disasters. He assured that the Interim Government will take steps as far as possible to address the situation.

Speaking to journalists after visiting the flood-affected areas of Ramerkura Brijpar in Sadar Union and Shalchura in Nalkura Union of Jhenaigati Upazila on Friday morning, Farooq-e-Azam acknowledged the severe damage caused by the recent monsoon floods across Sherpur and other districts.

He explained that detailed reports of the damages have been submitted to the central government by district administrations. “The government has established a central committee to bolster the rehabilitation program, with corresponding committees at the district and upazila levels,” he added.

The adviser also highlighted the involvement of public representatives, private organisations, and micro-lending institutions in relief and rehabilitation efforts. He expressed optimism about rehabilitating the affected communities, noting that some measures will be implemented immediately while others will require more time.

During the visit, Farooq-e-Azam distributed food supplies to 45 flood-affected families and provided 40 bundles of cotton along with cash assistance to 20 families.

Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mosa. Hafiza Begum, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Didarul Alam, Upazila Executive Officer Ashraful Alam Russell, and other local officials accompanied him during the visit.
