Dhaka, Oct 29 (V7N)– The government has initiated its election journey with new developments in forming the Election Commission, announced Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul. He revealed that a search committee for the Election Commission has already been established, awaiting formal gazetting. According to Nazrul, the chief advisor's signature on this committee’s formation may already be finalized, marking a significant step forward.
In a media briefing at the Secretariat following a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, Nazrul shared insights from their discussion. Turk has shown full support for the current interim government and stressed the importance of judicial independence. He urged for the independence of the judiciary and questioned the retention of the death penalty within Bangladesh’s legal system. In response, Nazrul noted that, given ongoing efforts to bring perpetrators of fascism to justice, altering the penalty provisions is not currently on the agenda.
Turk also emphasized the interconnectedness of human rights and rule of law, applauding the government's recent reform initiatives as efforts to bolster human rights protections in Bangladesh. Addressing the July massacre, he confirmed that a fact-finding committee is in place and actively investigating, while the UN headquarters closely monitors the situation to ensure accountability.
These discussions highlight the government’s commitment to transparency and human rights as Bangladesh embarks on its journey towards upcoming elections.
