Dhaka, Oct 29 (V7N)– Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, have withdrawn a writ petition requesting a ban on the activities of 11 political parties and the cancellation of three previous parliamentary elections held during the Awami League era. The High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Mahmudur Razi issued the withdrawal order following a plea by the petitioners' legal representatives.

The initial petition, filed by Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, and Hasibul Islam on October 28, sought to invalidate the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth parliamentary elections and revoke the privileges of Members of Parliament (MPs) elected in these terms. Additionally, it requested that a rule be issued questioning why these elections should not be declared illegal and why the official gazette notifications for these elections should not be canceled. The petition further sought to disallow these 11 parties from participating in future elections and to consider filing sedition charges against MPs from these terms.

The petition listed the 11 parties in question, including Awami League, Jatiya Party, Jasad, Jatiya Party (JP), Tariqat Federation, Demokratee Party, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Aktikadhara, Liberal Democratic Party, Bangladesh Samyavadi Dal (M-L) (Dilip Barua), and Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Party (Basad).

This legal move by the anti-discrimination student movement reflects ongoing concerns about transparency and political accountability in Bangladesh’s electoral processes.
