Dhaka, Nov 10 (V7N)- Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus is set to depart tomorrow for Baku, Azerbaijan, to attend the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. This high-stakes climate summit, running from November 11 to 22, aims to bolster global action against the mounting climate crisis. Prof Yunus, leading a small delegation, is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on November 14, according to officials from his office.
The summit will bring together global leaders to discuss urgent measures to limit climate change, hosted in Azerbaijan’s capital—a location symbolic for its role as a historical hub of oil production, one of the primary sources of carbon emissions. Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev expressed pride in hosting COP29, reiterating a commitment to boost renewable energy domestically while continuing oil and gas exports abroad.
Bangladesh’s Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, who will also attend, called on developed countries to meet their climate finance and technological support commitments to nations most at risk. She emphasized that nations like Bangladesh face disproportionate challenges from climate impacts, underscoring the need for collective action.
Finance will be a focal point at COP29, with a spotlight on the trillions of dollars needed to fund emission cuts and build climate resilience. The conference is also an opportunity for countries to present their updated national climate action plans, aligned with the Paris Agreement goals. Organizers hope that ambitious steps taken in Baku will help limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, contributing to sustainable development.
COP29 is seen as a critical moment for advancing meaningful progress on climate change, with calls for resilience-building across global economies and supply chains to withstand the severe inflationary pressures of unchecked global warming.
