Dhaka, Nov 21 (V7N) Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul emphasized that the provision to ban political parties was deliberately excluded from the International Crimes Tribunal Ordinance to ensure the fairness and credibility of the trials conducted under it.

Speaking during a visit to the International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday morning, Dr. Nazrul clarified the reasoning behind this decision:
"The issue of banning political parties was dropped after discussions with all stakeholders. This step was taken to prevent any questions regarding the fairness and impartiality of the trial process."

He further elaborated that the ordinance includes provisions for appeal in specific cases, ensuring that legal recourse remains available while maintaining a balanced framework. Dr. Nazrul added:
"These appeal options are very limited, but they exist to uphold the principles of justice and fairness within the legal framework."

The International Crimes Tribunal was established to prosecute individuals accused of war crimes during Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War. Its proceedings have been closely watched both domestically and internationally, with fairness being a cornerstone of its legitimacy.

Dr. Asif Nazrul’s remarks reflect the tribunal's commitment to conducting trials that stand above reproach, fostering confidence in its judicial integrity.
