Dhaka, Nov 24 (V7N) — The Ministry of Home Affairs is awaiting the High Court's direction regarding the potential ban on battery-powered auto-rickshaws, Home Affairs Adviser General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated on Sunday. The announcement followed a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Committee at the Secretariat.

The adviser called on agitators to conduct their programs peacefully, assuring that the ministry would comply with the High Court’s directives to resolve the issue. He also pledged to carefully consider the demands of the protestors and work toward a satisfactory solution.

"The law and order situation is gradually improving. However, any attempt to destabilize it will be strictly dealt with," Jahangir Alam Chowdhury warned.

The adviser highlighted that measures are being introduced to prevent the filing of false cases. Committees comprising Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) will be established at the district level to ensure citizens are not harassed.

Additionally, in efforts to improve the traffic system, the ministry plans to form community police units. These will involve retired members of law enforcement and the armed forces, the adviser noted.

The issue of battery-powered auto-rickshaws has sparked significant debate, with many advocating for a ban due to safety and environmental concerns, while others point to their economic benefits for operators. The ministry's decision will largely depend on the forthcoming High Court ruling.
