Dhaka, Dec 26 (V7N)-A Bangladeshi young man, Maruf Ahmed, 20, was killed allegeldy by gunfire from Indian Khasi people along Sylhet border on Thursday.
After being shot, his companions brought him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where he passed away while receiving treatment.
The incident occurred on Thursday at around 3:30pm, 60 yards inside Indian territory from border pillar 1282/7-S in the Minatila area of Jaintapur Upazila, where Maruf and several others crossed the border into a Khasi betel nut plantation.
The deceased, Maruf, was the son of Shahabuddin from Jhingabari village in Jaintapur Upazila.
Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman (PSC), commander of the 48th Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), confirmed the incident.
He said: “A confrontation ensued with the Khasi community, during which one of them shot Maruf with a single-barrelled shotgun. His companions then brought him back to Bangladesh, and his family admitted him to Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday afternoon.”
According to BGB sources, the BGB officially protested to the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) immediately after the incident.
On Thursday afternoon, at around 4:30pm, the BGB company commander lodged a formal protest during a flag meeting, demanding that the accused Indian citizen be brought to justice promptly.
