Dhaka, Dec 31 (V7N) — Forest and Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced that mobile courts will be operational tonight to curb fireworks and flying lanterns as part of Thirty-First Night celebrations. The measure aims to prevent noise and air pollution, as well as mitigate fire hazards and biodiversity loss.
Speaking to reporters at the Senate Building on Tuesday morning, Rizwana Hasan urged media outlets to create awareness. "I specifically request the media to broadcast reminders against bursting fireworks or crackers. Mobile courts will operate from this evening to ensure compliance," she stated.
She also highlighted ongoing efforts to introduce a new law for tree protection, which will include penalties for practices like driving nails into trees for advertisements.
A press release from the Environment Ministry on Monday reinforced the decision, citing the adverse effects of fireworks and lanterns. Noise pollution from such activities increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and mental stress. Additionally, lanterns pose fire risks and threaten biodiversity.
Under the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2006, first-time offenders face up to one month in jail, a fine of 5,000 taka, or both. Repeat violations can result in six months' imprisonment, a 10,000-taka fine, or both.
Authorities are urging public cooperation to ensure a safe and environmentally friendly New Year celebration.
