Dhaka, Jan 4,(V7N)- The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has intensified its nationwide campaign to eliminate the production, marketing, and use of polythene bags, a major environmental hazard.
As part of the initiative, monitoring teams are conducting inspections in markets and shopping malls across the country, encouraging the use of environmentally friendly alternatives such as jute and fabric bags.
A team led by Tapan Kumar Biswas, Additional Secretary and Chief of the Monitoring Committee, inspected Hatirpool and Palashi markets in Dhaka today. The team assessed the current use of polythene bags and raised awareness among traders and shoppers about the environmental benefits of sustainable alternatives.
Since the anti-polythene campaign launched on November 3, 2024, the following progress has been made:
216 mobile court drives conducted nationwide.
438 entities fined a total of Taka 28.73 lakh.
59,959 kilograms of polythene bags seized.
Speaking to journalists after the market inspection, Tapan Biswas emphasized the government’s determination to enforce the ban on polythene. He highlighted the importance of collective effort and urged citizens to adopt eco-friendly practices by carrying reusable bags during shopping.
The intensified campaign has seen active participation from law enforcement agencies and local market committees, ensuring compliance and spreading awareness at the grassroots level.
This initiative aligns with Bangladesh’s broader environmental goals to combat pollution and promote sustainable practices. The government remains committed to protecting the environment and reducing the adverse impacts of polythene waste.
