Chapainawabganj, Jan 11 (V7N) — Tensions escalated along the Chapainawabganj border as gunfire was heard near the Bagicha Para area of the Chakpara border in Shibganj upazila early Friday morning. Allegations have surfaced that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) fired eight to nine rounds near Main Pillar No. 182. However, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has confirmed hearing at least three rounds of gunfire.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m., according to local villagers and BGB personnel stationed near the border. Lieutenant Colonel Golam Kibria, commander of the 59th BGB Battalion, stated, "We heard three rounds of gunfire at the Chakpara border. However, we cannot confirm who fired the shots. The matter has been reported to the BSF, and further investigation is underway."

The gunfire follows rising tensions over the BSF's alleged attempt to construct a barbed wire fence on Noman's Land near the Chowka border in Binodpur Union, which had previously sparked controversy for bypassing discussions with Bangladesh.

Local residents, including Monirul Islam, a ward member of Shahbazpur Union Parishad, reported hearing 8–9 rounds of gunfire. He noted that such incidents often occur when smugglers attempt to transport goods across the border. However, he could not confirm whether anyone was injured in the incident.

As tensions remain high, both the BGB and BSF are expected to engage in discussions to clarify the situation and address the ongoing issues at the border.
