Dhaka, Jan 12 (V7N) — The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has been compelled to halt the construction of barbed wire fences at multiple points along the Bangladesh-India border due to the firm stance taken by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents, according to Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday at the Secretariat, the advisor revealed that India had initiated fence construction at five locations near the border. However, resistance from the BGB and local communities led to the suspension of these activities.

“India cannot build barbed wire fences within 150 yards of the border without prior discussion, as per international agreements. Bangladesh has no objection to such fences being built beyond the 150-yard limit,” he clarified.

The advisor highlighted that during the previous government’s tenure (2010–2023), certain border-related issues arose due to leniency, which should not have been allowed. He stressed that the current government is committed to addressing these challenges through diplomatic channels and maintaining sovereignty.

Looking ahead, he announced that a Director General-level meeting between the two countries is scheduled to take place in India in February. Additionally, the Foreign Advisor has been tasked with taking appropriate steps regarding border management, and summoning the Indian High Commissioner for discussions remains an option.

The advisor emphasized that all development or infrastructural activities along the border must be carried out through mutual agreement, and unilateral actions will not be tolerated.
