Davos, Jan 22 (V7N) — The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Bangladesh in finding a durable solution to the ongoing Rohingya crisis. Filippo Grandi, UNHCR’s High Commissioner, made this assurance during a meeting with Bangladesh's Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Tuesday.

“We are ready to assist you,” Grandi assured after Professor Yunus sought UNHCR's help in addressing the crisis, including organizing a major global conference later this year to garner international attention and support.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Professor Yunus urged the international community to amplify its focus on the Rohingya issue. “Your voice needs to be louder,” he told Grandi, stressing the strain Bangladesh is under due to the arrival of an additional 100,000 Rohingya refugees.

The Chief Advisor emphasized the complexity of the situation, pointing out that Myanmar continues to push more Rohingyas towards Bangladesh, exacerbating the crisis.

Grandi expressed gratitude to Bangladesh for improving living conditions for the Rohingya by permitting the use of better materials for shelter construction, moving beyond the earlier restrictions of bamboo and tarpaulin.

The two leaders also discussed the worsening humanitarian situation in Myanmar's Rakhine state, where the Arakan Army rebel group remains in conflict with the Myanmar military. Professor Yunus shared that he has appointed a high-level representative to address the crisis and is coordinating efforts with governments and international organizations.

The meeting underscored the need for global cooperation to resolve the protracted Rohingya crisis and provide relief to the millions displaced.
