Dhaka, Apr 13 (V7N) – Chief Advisor to the Interim Government Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has emphasized the spirit of unity and harmony among the people of Bangladesh, regardless of differences in religion, belief, or culture. He made these remarks while laying the foundation stone of Sampriti Bhavan at the International Buddhist Vihara in Merul Badda, Dhaka, on Sunday morning.

The event, organized by the Bangladesh Buddhist Federation, was held at 10:30 AM, marking a significant gesture of interfaith solidarity ahead of Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year.

"Wishing everyone a happy Pohela Boishakh," Dr. Yunus said, "This festival is a universal symbol of our harmony. People of all faiths—Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, as well as the ethnic communities of the hills and plains—will celebrate in their own ways, following their own customs."

Highlighting the historical significance of Buddhist institutions, Dr. Yunus said, "Since ancient times, Buddhist monasteries in this region have served not only as centers of religious practice, but also as beacons of education and public welfare. Monks and scholars from faraway lands came here, carrying the message of peace, harmony, and equality."

Referring to the teachings of Gautama Buddha, he added, “Buddhism seeks the well-being of all living beings. The great Buddha taught that peace and happiness should not be denied to anyone—even the smallest of creatures.”

He also paid tribute to Atish Dipankar, the celebrated Bengali Buddhist scholar, saying, "He carried the message of the Buddha to Tibet and China, where he is still revered with the highest honor. Our monuments, traditions, and heritage reflect a vital part of global human civilization."

Earlier in the day, Dr. Yunus formally unveiled the foundation stone of the Sampriti Bhavan and later held a discussion with members of the Buddhist community, reaffirming the government's commitment to preserving the country’s rich heritage of religious tolerance and cultural diversity.
