Dhaka, May 13 (V7N) – Commodore Arif Ahmed Mustafa, Chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), has stated that most boat accidents occur due to ignorance, and called on all boat owners, workers, and passengers to act with greater awareness and responsibility.
He made these remarks during a discussion held at Sadarghat in the capital on Tuesday morning, marking the observance of Boat Safety Week.
Highlighting the increased risks during the current Kalbaisakhi storm season, the BIWTA Chairman emphasized that safety guidelines must be strictly followed. He said BIWTA is working with a firm commitment to ensuring 100% safety of the waterways, and urged that greater attention be given to checking whether vessels are equipped with all necessary safety gear.
Calling for a joint initiative between BIWTA and vessel owners, Commodore Mustafa said collaborative supervision is essential to improve safety standards on rivers.
He also addressed the issue of river pollution, urging both passengers and launch crews not to throw solid waste into rivers. "Efforts are ongoing to curb river pollution, but public awareness and cooperation are crucial," he added.
