Dhaka, May 18 (V7N) – The National Consensus Commission expects to conclude the first phase of discussions within the next couple of days, said Dr. Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the Commission, as the second day of talks with Jamaat-e-Islami began on Sunday (May 18) at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Building.

“We aim to wrap up the first round of discussions shortly and move to the second phase,” Dr. Riaz said, noting that the Commission’s goal is to reach consensus with all parties and ultimately prepare a National Charter for Reform.

During the meeting, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher reiterated the party’s demand for a clear and immediate roadmap for national elections, emphasizing the urgent need to restore public trust.

“Fair elections are not possible without a level playing field,” Taher stated. He further remarked that Jamaat is ready to stand by the government to address instability and ensure national order, provided that democratic reforms are prioritized.

Taher added, “We should not delay too long in building consensus. The roadmap for fair elections must be announced soon.”

The National Consensus Commission is currently holding the first round of dialogues based on recommendations from five reform commissions, aiming to facilitate comprehensive political and electoral reforms through multiparty consensus.
