DHAKA, June 26 (V7N)– The holy Ashura, a day of profound religious significance commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussein (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala, will be observed in Bangladesh on July 06, 2025.

This date has been confirmed following the sighting of the moon for the month of Muharram today, Thursday, June 26, 2025. Consequently, the month of Muharram of 1447 Hijri will officially commence tomorrow, Friday, June 27, 2025.

The decision was finalized at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee, held this evening at the Islamic Foundation conference room within the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. A F M Khalid Hossain chaired the meeting.

Significance of Ashura:

For Muslims worldwide, Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, holds deep historical and spiritual meaning.

For Shia Muslims: It is primarily a day of solemn mourning and remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. This event is viewed as a symbol of resistance against injustice and oppression.

For Sunni Muslims: Ashura is observed as a day of gratitude and fasting. It commemorates the day Allah (SWT) saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Israelites from Pharaoh by parting the Red Sea. It is also associated with other significant events in Islamic history, such as Prophet Noah leaving the Ark. Sunni Muslims often fast on the 9th and 10th, or 10th and 11th of Muharram, as a recommended practice.

Ashura is a public holiday in Bangladesh, observed with religious reverence by both Sunni and Shia communities across the country.
