Dhaka, July 13 (V7N) – Political parties have resumed dialogue with the National Consensus Commission to discuss three key national issues — the appointment of the Chief Justice, the formation of a caretaker government, and the declaration of a state of emergency.
The second phase of the 12th-day reform meeting began around 11:30 am on Sunday at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital. Delegates from major political parties including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizens Party (NCP) are participating in this critical round of talks.
At the start of the dialogue, Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, delivered the introductory address, emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding and national interest in addressing the country’s institutional challenges.
Key Issues on the Agenda
-
Appointment of the Chief Justice
The dialogue began with discussions on how to ensure a transparent, credible, and independent process for appointing the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court — an issue that has drawn widespread attention amid recent debates over judicial impartiality. -
Caretaker Government Framework
The next point of discussion will be the future structure and authority of a caretaker government, particularly in relation to conducting fair elections and ensuring political neutrality during transitional periods. -
Emergency Powers and Their Use
The final topic of the day will focus on the constitutional provisions surrounding the declaration of a state of emergency, including its scope, duration, and oversight mechanisms, to prevent abuse of such powers in politically sensitive times.
The ongoing talks are part of a broader effort by the National Consensus Commission to forge political unity and build consensus on urgent governance and constitutional reforms, following months of unrest and polarization in the wake of the July-August movement.
More developments are expected as the day progresses.
