Dhaka, July 24 (V7N) – Sheikh Bashiruddin, the interim government's Trade Advisor, has firmly stated that Bangladesh will not enter into any trade agreement with the United States that compromises the country's national interest, particularly regarding the imposition of tariffs on Bangladeshi exports.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Thursday (July 24), Sheikh Bashiruddin said, “Positive discussions are ongoing with the United States on the issue of tariff reduction. However, the government will not accept any deal that goes against Bangladesh’s interests.”

He noted that although no invitation has yet been received from the US Trade Minister, Bangladesh has already sent a formal letter expressing its willingness to engage in dialogue. He added that if an invitation is extended, a delegation from Bangladesh will visit the United States for discussions.

The advisor further clarified that Bangladesh will not appoint any lobbyists in Washington, citing constraints in the US tariff system and its legal framework. He expressed hope that if a scheduled meeting does not occur by August 1, alternative arrangements for dialogue would still be possible.

In response to a question from journalists, Sheikh Bashiruddin confirmed that a virtual meeting will take place on Friday (July 25), where the issue of tariffs will be discussed. He added, “The ministry is working tirelessly to find a solution that serves our economic interests.”

Context: As per a prior announcement by former US President Donald Trump, an additional 35% tariff on Bangladeshi exports is expected to come into effect from August 1, 2025. This development has raised serious concerns among exporters and trade officials in Bangladesh.
