Dhaka, Feb 16 (V7N) — The Bangladesh Caretaker Advisory Council has adopted a formal vote of thanks to all parties involved in ensuring that the recent national parliamentary elections and referendum were conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful environment.
The resolution was passed during a Sunday meeting of the Advisory Council held at the office of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in Tejgaon, Dhaka.
Speaking at a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy after the meeting, the Chief Adviser’s press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, said that the first agenda of the meeting was to adopt a vote of thanks to all institutions and individuals who contributed to organizing what the council described as a successful and historic election. Council members also commended the role of the Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies, including the police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Coast Guard, Ansar, and the armed forces.
The council also adopted a vote of thanks for the recently retired former Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, recognizing his contributions and wishing him longevity.
The press secretary added that the Advisory Council described the election process as a “grand success” and noted that the country has likely never witnessed such a smooth and disciplined election. Election-related post-poll violence was reported to be significantly lower than in previous years. While four deaths were reported, only one was directly linked to election-related violence. An investigation committee will be formed regarding one incident involving a weapon.
Council members will remain in the country and attend the new government’s swearing-in ceremony. Shafiqul Alam said the advisers will travel in a flag-bearing car to the swearing-in ceremony, which will take place at the South Plaza of the National Parliament. After the event, the car will return them home without a flag.
Separately, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Foyez Ahmed Tayyab departed for Germany on an Emirates Airlines flight on Friday morning. Following media reports, he clarified on Facebook that he left Dhaka after formally completing his duties.
The caretaker government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, was formed on August 8, 2024, following the August 5 student and public uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government. The tenure of the interim government will formally conclude with the swearing-in of the new parliament and cabinet, scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, marking the official end of the caretaker administration’s responsibilities.
