Kolkata, Mar 9 (V7N) — India’s Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police has taken two Bangladeshi nationals, including the prime suspect in the murder of Inquilab Mancha convenor Sharif Osman Hadi, into 14-day police remand after their arrest near the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The main accused, Faisal Karim Masud, along with another suspect, Alamgir Hossain, was arrested late Saturday night from the Bongaon border area in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
The suspects were produced before a court on Sunday (March 8), where the presiding judge granted the STF’s request for a 14-day police remand for further interrogation.
Earlier, the Indian news agency ANI, quoting STF officials, reported that the two men had illegally entered India after committing serious crimes in Bangladesh, including extortion and murder. According to investigators, they had been hiding in the Bongaon border region and were waiting for an opportunity to return to Bangladesh.
Acting on intelligence inputs, a special STF team conducted a raid in the area and arrested them.
In an official statement, the STF identified the detainees as Rahul, alias Faisal Karim Masud (37), a resident of Patuakhali district in Bangladesh, and Alamgir Hossain (34), a resident of Dhaka.
During preliminary interrogation, the arrested individuals reportedly admitted their direct involvement in the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi. Investigators said the suspects fled Bangladesh after the murder and entered India illegally through the Meghalaya border.
They allegedly moved across several locations in India while concealing their identities before eventually reaching Bongaon, where they were planning to cross the border back into Bangladesh.
The STF also confirmed that a case has been filed at the relevant police station. Authorities are continuing the investigation to determine whether other members of the criminal network were involved and whether the suspects received assistance from anyone while hiding in India.
Meanwhile, efforts have begun to bring the two arrested suspects back to Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the arrests were made based on intelligence provided by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). The agency confirmed that the two main accused in the Hadi murder case — Rahul alias Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain — were detained from the Bongaon area of West Bengal.
Officials said necessary procedures are underway to facilitate their repatriation to Bangladesh for further legal action.
