Dhaka, Mar 11 (V7N) – The ruling party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is holding its parliamentary party meeting at the 13th National Parliament, a day before the opening of the first session. The meeting is being presided over by Parliament Leader and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The meeting began at 11 am on Wednesday in the government party meeting room at the National Parliament Building. Party leaders are discussing preparations for the parliament session starting tomorrow, Thursday.
Among the key agenda items are the appointments of the President, Speaker, and Deputy Speaker for the first session. While the ruling party traditionally has its candidates elected due to its majority, BNP has proposed offering the post of Deputy Speaker to the opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami.
It is not yet clear whether Jamaat-e-Islami will accept the offer. The opposition party is expected to discuss and decide on this matter in its parliamentary party meeting later today.
Observers say the decision could set the tone for cooperation between the ruling party and the opposition in the new parliament.
