Cox’s Bazar, Oct 01 (V7N) – A Rohingya man accused in an arms case escaped from Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital while in handcuffs on Wednesday night, police said.

The accused, Ibrahim, fled from the male ward on the fifth floor of the hospital at around 10pm, according to police and hospital sources.

Ibrahim is the son of Mohammad Salim of Camp 26 in Mochni, Hnila Union, Teknaf. He had been admitted to the hospital for medical treatment after being arrested in an arms case.

An assistant sub-inspector and two constables from the Police Lines had been assigned to guard him. He reportedly escaped while in handcuffs, evading the security personnel.

Police said Ibrahim and another Rohingya man, Nurul Alam, were detained by local residents on Sept 25 after they were allegedly involved in an attempt to abduct local youth Zakir Hossain in the Dhamankhali area of Palongkhali Union in Ukhiya.

The two were later handed over to Ukhiya police. Police said a locally made pistol and five bullets were recovered from them at the time.

Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman Majumder said several police teams were working to recapture Ibrahim.
