Dhaka, April 13 (V7N) – Today marks Chaitra Sankranti, the final day of the Bengali calendar month of Chaitra, symbolizing the end of the year 1432. The new year, Pohela Boishakh, will be celebrated tomorrow, Tuesday (April 14), ushering in the year 1433.
Traditionally, Chaitra Sankranti is observed as a day of reflection and transition, with people bidding farewell to the old year and preparing to welcome the new one. Across the country, various cultural events, fairs, and festivities are organized to mark the occasion.
For many, the day holds religious significance. Devotees perform rituals such as bathing, fasting, and charity according to their beliefs, while people of different communities observe their own customs and traditions.
Rural areas, in particular, come alive with traditional fairs and cultural performances. Activities such as Halkhata preparations, stick games, folk songs, processions, and Raybesh dances are commonly seen. One of the major attractions is the Charak festival, especially the Charak Gajan, where processions featuring symbolic representations of deities like Shiva and Gauri are celebrate.
With the observance of Chaitra Sankranti, the old year is bid farewell, making way for a new beginning filled with hope, prosperity, and unity as Bengalis prepare to celebrate the universal festival of Pohela Boishakh.
