Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud urged the United Nations and other partners to take coordinated steps for the repatriation of about 1.3 million Rohingyas in Bangladesh to their homeland, Myanmar.
During meetings with UN officials in New York, Hasan stressed the need for resolving the ongoing conflict in Rakhine state for the Rohingyas' betterment.
He noted that while Bangladesh initially welcomed the refugees, the situation has worsened, with camps becoming hubs for crime. Hasan also highlighted the issue of Myanmar Border Guard Police and Army members fleeing to Bangladesh and the necessity of preventing such recurrences.
In a meeting with the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Myanmar, Julie Bishop, Hasan emphasized that the conflict in Myanmar should not be used as an excuse to delay Rohingya repatriation.
Hasan also addressed a UN program on crisis management, calling for joint initiatives by UN agencies to resolve the refugee crisis and improve conditions for the Rohingya population. He was accompanied by Ambassador Muhammad A Muhith and other Ministry and Mission members.
