Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud praised the US for its continuous support to Bangladesh, citing contributions in areas like disaster response, pandemic relief, agricultural development, and humanitarian aid for the Rohingya community.

During a reception marking the 248th Independence Day of the US at Hotel Le Meridien, Dr. Mahmud highlighted that the US has consistently aided Bangladesh during crises.

Outgoing US Ambassador Peter Haas emphasized the importance of fostering a stronger relationship between the US and Bangladesh. He acknowledged dissidents, journalists, human rights activists, and others challenging the status quo as "brave patriots."

The foreign minister's remarks came amid US pressure for ensuring "free and fair" elections in Bangladesh. Dr. Mahmud acknowledged the US’s significant role during the Liberation War in 1971 and various other crises, including the 1991 cyclone and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Mahmud commended the "magical leadership" of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for Bangladesh's achievements in agriculture and other sectors, attributing these successes partly to US support. He urged continued US assistance as Bangladesh aims to become a developed country by 2041 and highlighted the importance of US help in resolving the Rohingya crisis and combating climate change.
