Kulaura, September 03 — A Bangladeshi girl named Swarna Das (16) was killed by gunfire from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) while attempting to cross the border into India at Kulaura, Moulvibazar. The incident, which occurred late Sunday night, was confirmed by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Vinay Bhushan Roy of Kulaura Police Station on Tuesday.

Swarna, an eighth-grade student at Nirod Bihari High School, was the daughter of Parendra Das, a resident of Kalnigarh village in the Paschim Juri Union of Juri Upazila, Moulvibazar. According to her father, Swarna and her mother attempted to cross the Lalarchak border into Tripura, India, illegally to visit Swarna's elder brother, who has been residing there for a long time. They were assisted by two local brokers in their attempt to cross the border.

The tragic incident occurred around 9 pm on Sunday night when Swarna and her mother reached the Indian barbed wire fence. The BSF opened fire, resulting in Swarna's death on the spot. Her mother, however, survived the shooting.

The incident came to light when a team from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) visited the family home on Monday evening to inform them of the incident. "The matter was brought to light on Monday night, but the incident happened a day ago," OC Vinay Bhushan Roy told reporters.

Currently, Swarna's body is in the possession of the BSF. The process of handing over the body is underway, pending a meeting between the border forces of both countries. OC Vinay Bhushan Roy stated that the situation is under full legal process and will depend on diplomatic discussions and decisions between Bangladesh and India.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety and security of individuals living near the border, and discussions are expected to address these ongoing issues.
