Dhaka, Sep 07 (V7N)— The Sanatan Adhikar Manch organised a torch march in the capital on Friday evening, demanding an end to attacks on minority communities and justice for the affected individuals. Leaders and supporters gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar before marching to the Jatiya Press Club.
At the rally preceding the torch march, Suman Roy, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu Parishad and organiser of the event, announced a long march to besiege Dhaka on October 5 if the demands of the minority communities are not met. He stated, "If the previously announced eight points are not implemented, and the persecution of the Sanatan community continues, people from all over the country will come to Dhaka and block the roads on October 5."
The torch procession and rally were attended by various community leaders and activists. Anil Pal, General Secretary of the Bhaktasangh Society, expressed disappointment over the government's failure to fulfil promises. "Despite the government advisors' assurances, not a single demand has been addressed," he said.
The protesters also raised concerns about the forced resignation of teachers in different parts of the country and demanded strict punishment for students who insulted educators.
The Sanatan community's eight-point demand includes:
1. Trying cases of attacks on minorities through 'speedy trial tribunals.'
2. Providing compensation and rehabilitation for victims of communal violence.
3. Enacting a Minority Protection Act and forming a Ministry of Minority Affairs.
4. Elevating the Hindu Religious Welfare Trust to a Hindu Foundation.
5. Elevating the Buddhist and Christian Religious Welfare Trusts to Foundations.
6. Enacting the Recovery and Conservation of Divorced Property Act.
7. Proper implementation of the Transfer of Vested Property Act.
8. Allowing five days off during Durga Puja.
The Sanatan Adhikar Manch has warned that if their demands are not met, the October 5 long march will see a mass mobilisation from all over the country to pressure the government.
